Aisne-Marne American Cemetery & Memorial

The Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial is a 42-acre, World War I cemetery at the foot of Belleau Wood in Northern France.

Aisne-Marne American Cemetary & Memorial

The cemetery contains the graves of 2,289 American war dead. Most are casualties from Belleau Wood and the Battle of Château-Thierry, as well as those from the Marne valley in the summer of 1918. The site is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, and its dedication ceremony was held on Memorial Day, May 30, 1937.

Aisne-Marne American Cemetary & Memorial – Chapel

The Memorial Chapel is built over the site of front-line battle trenches dug in defense of Belleau Wood. It is decorated with sculptures and stained-glass details of wartime personnel, equipment and insignia. Inscribed on its interior wall are 1,060 names of those missing in action.

During World War II, in 1940 the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery chapel was damaged due to heavy fighting in the vicinity. All damage was repaired except for one shell hole in the chapel, left as a reminder of what took place.
