CANAL DU MIDI Marseillan to Capestang, France
In the morning we visit the Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne which was founded in the 13th Century. Of classic gothic style this rose-coloured abbey has been used as a storehouse for the ageing of wine since the Revolution. After lunch we cruise through the nature reserve of Bagnas with its flamingos to Agde, home of the famous three-way round lock. Dinner aboard. Tuesday, Day 3 Agde to Villeneuve This morning we visit Pézénas, a delightful village of artisans, best known for its associations with the French playwright Molière, who is said to have written many plays whilst staying there. After lunch we continue to cruise the “petite Camargue” taking us through the famous “passage” under the Libron barrage, one of the many engineering feats of the Canal, to Villeneuve-Lès-Béziers. Dinner aboard. Wednesday, Day 4 Villeneuve to Béziers This morning’s cruise takes us along the 300 year old tree-lined canal to Béziers, where we cross the aqueduct over the River Orb and then ascend the 7-lock flight of Fonserannes. Lunch at local restaurant “Octopus” after which you can take a stroll along the Allées Pierre Riquet, Béziers’ elegant high street avenue, to the Cathedral St-Nazaire which towers over the Orb Valley. Dinner aboard. Thursday, Day 5 Béziers to Regismont This morning’s suggested excursion is to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Explore the Archbishop’s Palace and an excavated portion of the original Roman road, the Via Domitia. In the afternoon we cruise through vineyards and under the shade of the plane trees which line the canal, gently circling the little villages to Regismont-le-Haut. Dinner aboard. Friday, Day 6 Regismont to Capestang After breakfast we drive to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th Century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1210, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. In the afternoon we cruise to Capestang, a thriving village with a strong link to its wine producing heritage. Farewell dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7 Capestang to Narbonne After breakfast depart Capestang by about 10am and return to Narbonne. Note: This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.
