CANAL DU MIDI Béziers to Puichéric (Carcassonne), France
Morning cruise along the historic canal, taking us the through the very first canal tunnel at Malpas one of the many engineering prowess unique to the Canal du Midi, to Capestang where we will moor overlooking the 13th Century Collegiate. Afternoon excursion to Pezenas, a delightful village, mostly famous for its associations with the famous French playwright Moliere, who is said to have written many plays while staying here. Dinner aboard. Tuesday, Day 3 Capestang to Argeliers In the morning we cruise the 300 year old tree lined winding canal to Argeliers, once an important clay quarry for the Romans. Afternoon excursion for a wine tasting at the Chateau Pech Celeyran, this domaine with award winning wines, has been run by the descendants of the Saint Exupery family for the past five generations. Dinner ashore. Wednesday, Day 4 Argeliers to Roubia This morning’s excursion is to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy a visit to the Archbishop's Palace and the indoor market at the hub of this bustling canal side town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere. A chance to sample some local cuisine with lunch ashore. Afternoon cruise, through vineyards and pine trees along the “grand bief,” another engineering prowess unique to the Canal du Midi, to Roubia, a picturesque mooring under the trees and a perfect opportunity to try your hand at pétanque the local sport of boules Thursday, Day 5 Roubia to Homps This morning we cruise through the trademark olive shaped locks of the Canal in the shade of the plane and pine trees, gently ascending to the port of Homps once an important commandery for the Knights Hospitaller. Afternoon excursion to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1215, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. We then stop at the “Oulibo”, Occitan for olive. This cooperative olive oil press is a great opportunity to sample the famous Lucques olive. Dinner aboard. Friday, Day 6 Homps to Puichéric Fascinating morning tour of Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete mediaeval fortified city in existence today with its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defenses, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting. In the afternoon we cruise through the series of locks and narrow bridges to the rural setting of the lock of Aiguilles near the village of Puichéric. Farewell Dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7 Puichéric to Narbonne After breakfast depart Puichéric and return to Narbonne by 11am. Note: This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.
