CAMARGUE - CANAL DU MIDI Béziers - Aigues Mortes, France
This morning we descend the seven-lock flight of Fonseranes and cruise across the aqueduct over the river Orb, through the port of Béziers, home to Pierre Riquet, engineer of the Canal du Midi, to the rural setting of Portiragnes. Afternoon excursion for a wine tasting at the Chateau de Raissac, dating to the 18th century this wine Domaine has been in the same family for the past six generations. Dinner aboard. Tuesday, Day 3 : Portiragnes to Agde This morning we take an excursion to Pezenas, a delightful village, mostly famous for its associations with the famous French playwright Moliere, who is said to have written many plays while staying here. Then an afternoon cruise along the 300 year old canal to the old Greco/Phoenician port of Agde and explore its narrow, medieval streets carved from the Languedocian hills' black volcanic stone. Dinner aboard Wednesday, Day 4 : Agde to Marseillan This morning we cruise along the tree lined Canal du Midi, through the renowned round lock to the fishing village of Marseillan. Lunch ashore at the famous restaurant chez Philippe in Marseillan. Afternoon excursion to the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne, once one of the wealthiest abbeys of France it was turned into a working winery after the revolution, thus preventing it from become a stone quarry. Thursday, Day 5 : Marseillan to Maguelone In the morning we cross the Etang de Thau, a large inland salt water lake, past the oyster farms it is renowned for, to the remote Abbey of Maguelone where we are 200 yards from the Mediterranean. Afternoon excursion to the thriving city of Montpellier, famous for its many Hotels Particuliers and home to the oldest University of Medicine, the main attraction today is the winding pedestrian streets lined with boutiques. Dinner aboard Friday, Day 6 : Maguelone to Aigues Mortes We cruise this morning the Canal du Rhone ŕ Sete, through the Camargue National Park with its wild horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes, to Aigues Mortes. After lunch aboard stroll from our mooring outside the town walls to visit the Tour de Constance, built in 1248 as a lighthouse and since used as a prison, just one of the many sites to visit in this historic departure point for St Louis’ crusades. Captain’s Farewell Dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7 : Aigues Mortes to Montpellier After breakfast, disembark the barge and transfer by minibus to Montpellier by about 11am. Note: This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change. On alternative weeks the cruise operates in reverse direction and the pickup and drop off points are reversed.
