PROVENCE Avignon to Marseillan, France
This morning we drive to the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape where you will enjoy a visit at the “Vergers du Pape” past the original Pope’s Chateau ruins followed by a wine tasting at the Chateau de Mont Redon. Return to the boat for lunch aboard. Afternoon cruise past the Pope’s Palace in Avignon and the famous Pont, to the village of Vallabrègues. Dinner aboard. Tuesday, Day 3 : Roquemaure to Arles In the morning we take an excursion to the UNESCO world heritage “Pont du Gard”, a three tier aqueduct built to channel water to Nîmes, it was the tallest aqueduct to have been built during the Roman Empire. We return to Enchanté for lunch aboard and cruise past the citadel of King René at Tarascon on the mighty river Rhone to Arles where we will moor just outside of the walls of the ancient city. Take a stroll to visit some of Vincent Van Gogh’s haunts on foot through the pedestrian heart of this old Roman Capital. Dinner aboard. Wednesday, Day 4 : Arles to Franquevaux This morning we drive to Saint Rémy de Provence famous for its many art galleries and antiques stores reputed for their quality. We then take a short drive to les Baux de Provence, this amazing natural fortress was once a stronghold of the counts of Provence and is currently part of the Grimaldi heritage. Lunch ashore. Return to the boat to cruise down the Petit Rhone through the lock which links the river to the canal “Rhone à Sète”. We moor in Franquevaux in the heart of the Camargue National Park where you fill be able to admire the wild life. Dinner aboard. Thursday, Day 5 : Franquevaux to Maguelone We cruise in the morning to Aigues-Mortes, late morning excursion of the 13th Century walled city, which was rebuilt by Saint Louis as France’s only Mediterranean port at the time and used as an embarkation point for his crusades. Home to many local artists the town is also renowned for its strong link to the Camargue’s many Manades. After lunch aboard we continue to cruise the petite Camargue past wild horses, black bulls, colourful bee-eaters and pink flamingoes. We moor at the Abbaye of Maguelone, a short pleasant walk to a quiet Mediterranean beach. Dinner aboard. Friday, Day 6 : Maguelone to Marseillan This morning we visit Bouzigues, a perfect opportunity to view the oyster beds and find out more about the culture of a staggering 12 000 tons of oysters a year, an industry which has been popular for over a 100 years. Combined with a tour of the Sète covered food market, return to a seafood lunch aboard Enchanté. After lunch we will cruise past Frontignan, out onto the Etang de Thau, to the picturesque village of Marseillan. Farewell dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7 : Marseillan to Avignon AAfter breakfast, disembark the barge by 10am and transfer to Avignon Note: This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.
