CAMARGUE - CANAL DU MIDI Aigues Mortes - Béziers, France
Stroll from our mooring outside the town walls to visit the Tour de Constance, built in 1248 as a lighthouse and since used as a prison. Then in the afternoon we cruise the Canal du Rhone à Sete through the Camargue National Park with its wild horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes, to the remote Abbey of Maguelone where we are 200 yards from the Mediterranean. Dinner aboard Tuesday, Day 3 : Maguelone to Marseillan This morning we take an excursion to the thriving city of Montpellier, famous for its many Hotels Particuliers and home to the oldest University of Medicine, the main attraction today is the winding pedestrian streets lined with boutiques. Lunch aboard followed by an afternoon cruise crossing the Etang de Thau, a large inland salt water lake, past the oyster farms it is renowned for, to the fishing village of Marseillan. Dinner aboard Wednesday, Day 4 : Marseillan to Agde This morning we visit the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne, once one of the wealthiest abbeys of France it was turned into a working winery after the revolution, thus preventing it from become a stone quarry. Lunch ashore at the famous restaurant chez Philippe in Marseillan. Then an afternoon cruise to the old Greco/Phoenician port of Agde and explore its narrow, medieval streets carved from the Languedocian hills' black volcanic stone. Dinner aboard. Thursday, Day 5 : Agde to Portiragnes Morning excursion to Pezenas, a delightful village, mostly famous for its associations with the famous French playwright Moliere, who is said to have written many plays while staying here. Afternoon cruise along the tree lined Canal du Midi, through the renowned round lock to the rural setting of Portiragnes. Dinner aboard Friday, Day 6 : Portiragnes to Béziers This morning we cruise along the 300 year old canal to the port of Béziers, home to Pierre Riquet, engineer of the Canal du Midi. Late morning excursion to the flower market on “les Allées” and admire the panoramic view from the Cathedral. Afternoon cruise across the aqueduct over the river Orb and then ascend the seven-lock flight of Fonseranes. Captain’s Farewell Dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7 : Béziers to Montpellier After breakfast, disembark the barge and transfer by minibus to Montpellier by about 11am. Note: This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.
